Being a Junior Data Scientist in a start-up is daunting. It’s not easy and you will have to overcome a lot of hurdles. The majority of start-up companies don’t actually need a Data Scientist, and the ones that do because their business is data-oriented have little support.
For companies that don’t need Data Scientists, just need someone who knows what to do with data. They don’t have an understanding of what they can do with their data and want to make use of it. The spark in need for Data Scientists has also become contagious; every company is trying to hire a Data Scientist.
On the other hand, you may have just got a job for a start-up company that deals with a lot of data and has specific aims for their data usage. You will be given data to explore, clean, analyze and produce outputs; which is everything a Data Scientist does. However, working in a start-up where you are part of a very small team or the only person on the data team is very difficult. You can either excel or it could be a complete burden on you.
