The stages which got me to this point of posting my first article on Medium.

Plant Growth Stages from www.freepik.com

Germination

When I was a young girl, my mother had a bookshelf, with a range of quality and timeless classic books. I was the only person in my household who actually made use of it. I guess everybody else just saw it as something which makes the house look nice.

In primary school, it was Daniel Handler, pen name Lemony Snicket and his series: A Series of Unfortunate Events which watered my growth of wanting to read more and write. This is when my seed was planted, the germination started in my heart.

Seedling

It was at secondary school, where I dived into the beauty of the English language and its literature. It was at this point I started to put pen to paper.

I, unfortunately, experienced some life-changing matters from a young age, and coming from a South Asian culture of not being able to express oneself pushed me toward writing it all down. I don’t regret it because I wouldn’t have had the courage to be sitting here writing today.

I started writing about the unfortunate passing of my father due to Cancer and the not-so-long after the murder of my Uncle. I was at a difficult stage in my life, I was only 12 years old when I lost two father figures within the space of 6 months. So you can imagine, I had a lot to say but instead, I had a lot to write. However, let’s not get into that.

Vegetative

At this point, Nitrogen is the key component of chlorophyll which gives the green pigment in plants. It gives them their colour.

Learning was my Nitrogen, so I continued to read various books and started to dive into poetry. I was intrigued by how poetic devices were the tools in order to construct a poem together. It was like a screw and its driver, they needed one another to do the job right.

I saw the beauty in poetry the same people see in music. I saw how one sentence fit like a puzzle to another, how one sentence is the mother to another, how one sentence finished another.

The same way I have built up the courage to write my first Medium article, I hope one day I will be able to release my poetry and publish a book.

Budding

A few months ago I applied for an intern job with a company called AI Time Journal. If you would like to have a read of my articles with AI Time Journal, please click here and let me know what you think. They primarily focus on the use of Artificial Intelligence and Technology and me being a rookie Data Scientist used this as a transition for my leaves the start growing buds.

I had to get myself out there. I needed people to know that I had an interest in writing. I needed people to know who I was.

I started posting an article once a week with the hope that it would increase my network on LinkedIn and drive potential freelance writing opportunities my way and guess what? It did. I saw my buds growing and at the same time, I was learning more about the field I had just entered. Changing careers is always daunting especially when it’s your first commercial experience, so having an intern position that allowed me to share my personal experiences was a genuine gateway of relief for my imposter syndrome. I learned the elements of writing; purpose, clarity, research, and considering your audience which all played a role in the development of my new career.

I slowly got comfortable with writing, time management, and topics of interest which led me to this point of finally posting my first Medium article.

However, there are still two stages of growth left: Flowering and Ripening. I have not yet achieved this part but with the hope that I've pushed myself to publish this article, I will slowly see my buds pushing out their shell to have a peek of what it feels like to bloom.

I hope you enjoyed my first article and join me on this new path. If anybody reading this has ever thought about wanting something in life, please do it. Use the same growth plan, from planting a seed or something that works for you. We have time, let’s make it worthwhile.
